  • Feeding the need to Read

From the month of October through March our Raccoons are helping to support local restaurants, and earning free meals, through reaching their reading goals.  Every month that a scholar reaches their reading goal they will receive a coupon for a free meal that can be redeemed at the following local participating restaurants (Craftsman Table & Tap, Everly, Hubbard Avenue Diner, Luigí’s Pizza, Monty’s Blue Plate Diner or Tex Tubb’s Taco Palace) Scholars will also receive a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut each month that they reach their goal.  Thank you for supporting our raccoons!

Oldie, but goodies .....

  • Please send in a pair of ear buds or head phones for your 5th grader for them to use at school.
  • Please remember to have your child fully charge their chromebook EVERY DAY and return it to school.  Thank You!!
  • Picture Day - Coming on October 12, 2022
  • Student Success Night will be on Tuesday, October 25th--5:30-7:00 (classrooms will be open from 5:30-6:30 to visit.)
  • Would you like to volunteer on field trips or in the classroom?  If so, MMSD is now requiring everyone to have a Level 2 certification.  What does this mean?  Please check out the link.  Fair warning....it is time consuming. If you were a level 2 last year,  you will receive a email to "renew" before it expires. (This is quite easy to do is what we hear. ) Interested in volunteering at Randall or chaperoning a field trip with your student's class? - start the process by visiting the Volunteering page at MMSD’s website.

5th Grade Math this week....

  • For Number Corner this month, we finished up on how to show the relationship between decimals and fractions using money and time.  We are also noticed how equivalent fractions and decimals are made.
  • October Number Corner will be focused around finding the volume of 3d objects using various perspectives.  We will also work with finding the changing mass of carrots over time and translate our data into a graphing activity.
  • Our first unit of study is on Multiplication and Volume ended.  This week we finished up our lessons and took an assessment.
  • Next week we will start Unit 2 that will focus on adding and subtracting fractions.

Literacy this week....

  • This week we actually took a mid-module assessment to see where we are at as a group.  We also continued to read more of our text Esperanza Rising. Students are being asked to break apart vocabulary words and look at affixes and suffix meaning.  They are quoting accurately and writing summary paragraphs.
  •  Our theme for this first quarter is Human Rights.
  • While reading Esperanza Rising we are reading and discussing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Abridged for Youth. Here is a copy of what they are reading and studying, for you to discuss at home with your student.
