5th Grade Math this week....

    • Ask your kiddo why a why a square is always a kite and a rhombus, but a kite is not always a square and a rhombus is not always a kite??  And, is a rhombus a square every single time??
  • This week we revisited an old workplace game, The Product Game, but revised it by using larger numbers to help us practice our multiplication strategies.
  • We also continued to make connections between whole numbers, decimals and fractions as we used our multiplication and division strategies with story problems.
  • Along with our strategies, we are also working with the multiplication algorithm.

Literacy this week....

  •  Our theme for Module 2--Rainforests.
  • This week we completed our mid-unit assessment for Module 2/Unit 1.

  • We learned about and practiced "science talks" where we discuss our learning in a small group while others listen to our discussion.
  • We prepared for our end of unit assessment for Module 2/Unit 1 where we will gather and organize information from various texts and participate in a science talk in front of peers next week.
  • We did some vocabulary work and added to our word walls.
Science this week....
  • Our new unit is:  Modeling Matter
  • Our guiding question for this unit is: What happens when two substances are mixed together?
  • We continued with our third and final chapter: Why can salad dressing ingredients separate again after being mixed?
  • We plan to finish up this unit by Winter Break.
  • After Winter Break, we will do a mini-unit on Native Americans and then another mini-unit on working  with maps of the United States before we begin our next science unit: Earth Systems.
