Oldie, but goodies .....

  •  Families, Please find the January Advanced Learning Newsletter at this link.

5th Grade Math this week....

  • January Number Corner--This month we will be focusing on multiplication and addition of fractions as it relates to time and money.  We will also be working with numerical patterns and graphing.
  • February Number Corner--This month we will be revisiting the old friend known as area.  We will look at the dimensions of various objects and multiply to find the area of each object in square units.   In addition, we will be measuring liquids and converting liters and deciliters to  milliliters and back again.
  • This week we focused our learning around strategies for multiplying fractions of whole numbers, doing some fraction story problems and not only learning the algorithm for these, but also how to show our understanding.

Literacy this week....

  • Our theme for Module 2--Rainforests.
  • This week we completed our Unit 2 assessment.
  • We also used a model narrative writing piece to analyze the structure and then work in groups to create our own narrative writing piece.
  • In addition, we did a mini-lesson on conjunctions, prepositions and interjections with the class. (Fun video to watch and share  https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/QgrcJHsTnPztFbtRxSkGZppTVFBvQhBpFBB?projector=1)
  • Next week students will finish up this group narrative piece with some revisions with expanding their writing.  Then, they will begin the end of unit 3 assessment.
Science this week....
  • Next week we will start our third science unit-Earth Systems.
  • Unit Question:  What can determine how much water is available for human use?
  • Chapter One: Why does more rain form over West Ferris than East Ferris?
Social Studies this week....
  • This week we talked about what Black History Month means, means to us, and what we will be learning this month.
  • Next week we will begin some more in depth learning, questioning, and discussions.  Classrooms may differ on what they are doing, so be sure to ask your kiddo what they did.

SELS this week...
